Secrets of the 2011 NFL Season (Pt. 1) - Sports Central

* In the NFL's September 11th season opener featuring the last two Super Bowl champions, the Saints outlast the home-standing Packers, 38-34. Reggie Bush's dynamic 75-yard punt return late in the fourth quarter is the game-winning score. An overjoyed Bush celebrates bravely with a Lambeau Leap into a sea of Packers fans, and the Green Bay faithful are surprisingly receptive, making Bush feel quite welcome, with a bounty of cash and gifts.

The Saints falter late in the year, and finish 8-8, good for third in the NFC South. The Packers win the NFC North and lose in the divisional round to the Lions.

* In the October 17th Dolphins/Jets contest at the Meadowlands, New York strength and conditioning coach Bill Hughan outdoes former Jets coach Sal Alosi when he slips Miami running back Ricky Williams a hit of LSD after Williams is tackled out of bounds on a first quarter sweep play. As "tripping" incidents go, Hughan's misstep easily overshadows Alosi's in infamy, and Hughan is fired the following day and charged with felonious assault, although Williams, known to drop acid as easily as he drops charges, forgives Hughan.

The Dolphins upset the Jets 24-22, as Williams rushes for 121 yards and a score, and, despite his impairment, passes with flying colors, tossing a short touchdown pass to Brian Hartline.

* After offseason neck surgery leaves him scarred and unable to practice, Peyton Manning teams with Under Armour and the estate of Charles Nelson Reilly to develop a fashionable line of moisture-wicking neckerchiefs. Manning introduces the product at VH1's Fashion Week in September, and sales skyrocket thereafter, with Under Armour neckerchiefs becoming a worldwide phenomenon, sported by influential people ranging from Snoop Dogg to Perez Hilton to Sarah Palin to Muammar Gaddafi.

In a related note, the Tim Tebow-endorsed Jockey line of men's thongs, dubbed the "Jockey Strap," is a monumental failure, and is pulled from retailers' shelves after only a week on the market.

* At TNA's Hardcore Justice pay-per-view card in August, world tag team champions Beer Money, Inc. face a surprise challenge from none other than the team of A.J. Hawk of the Packers and the Rams James Laurinaitis. The newly-formed tag team, known officially as the "New Road Warriors," and unofficially as "Hawk and Animal's Son," capture the belts when Laurinaitis shoulder-blocks James Storm for the pin at the 9:34 mark.

Their reign is short-lived, as Hawk and Laurinaitis lose the belts the following night in Memphis to Beer Money, and immediately turn on each other, initiating a feud that culminates in Green Bay on October 16, when the Packers host the Rams. Afterwards, Laurinaitis defeats Hawk in an arm wrestling match arranged by Vince McMahon.

* After Chad Ochocinco rides a bull for 1.5 seconds in May, the Bengals wide receiver goes one better in early June when he "shoots the bull" for eight consecutive hours in a marathon Twitter session, a stunt performed to raise awareness for Ochocinco himself.

Ochocinco has a tough year, facing the opposite problem than that of quarterback Carson Palmer: he wants to be in Cincinnati, but no one else does. Cincinnati finishes 5-11, last place in the AFC North.

* Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie leads the AFC with 9 interceptions, and at the team's year-end awards banquet, dedicates one pick to each of his children. Cromartie also records 8 tackles on the year, and, in turn, dedicates one each to his children's mothers.

* Kanye West, at the behest of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, reprises his 2008 hit "Love Lockdown" as "League Lockout," a song Goodell e-mails to every NFL player with a message urging them to tailor a swift end to the lockout. The move backfires, and players accuse both Goodell and West of selling out to "the man."

The lockout ends on June 29th, after President Barrack Obama authorizes a group of mediating operatives, known as "Deal Team 6," to intervene.

* On July 23rd, Ben Roethlisberger weds his fiance, Ashley Harlan, in a lavish ceremony at the Hilton at South Padre Island, Texas. Security is tight at the event, particularly in the bathrooms. Guests are treated to a post-ceremonial meal of nachos and Jello shots. Steelers teammate Troy Polamalu plays the "Wedding March" on the piano, while traitorous teammate and terrorist sympathizer Rashard Mendenhall shocks invitees by playing an original piece called the "Perp Walk" on the kazoo.

A blissful Roethlisberger has his finest season, crediting it to the "steady peace" matrimony has offered him. The Steelers finish 11-5, tied with the Ravens for first in the AFC South.

* In the November 13th Lions/Bears contest at Soldier Field, Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson creates another rules headache for the league when he takes a short pass along the sideline from Matthew Stafford and hops on one leg 65 yards downfield before being shoved out of bounds by Charles Tillman at the Bears one-yard line. Officials originally call the catch legitimate, but after minutes of deliberation, it is overturned.

Stafford raises his arms in disgust, and separates his right shoulder in the process.

Johnson leads the league in receptions and touchdown catches. The Lions finish 10-6, second in the NFC North, and reach the NFC Championship Game, where they fall to the Falcons.

* Pop diva Christina Aguilera, determined to repair her reputation after February's Super Bowl fiasco, campaigns to sing the national anthem at November 20th's Eagles/Giants game at the Meadowlands. Aguilera is given the chance, and makes history, as her rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" becomes the first to be subjected to the NFL's replay policy. After further review, Aguilera's invitation is overturned.

* Tom Brady leads the NFL with 37 touchdown passes, including five in Week 6 35-24 win over the 4-0 Cowboys. Brady shows classic poise in the pocket, but his gutsiest play comes on a 15-yard TD pass to Deion Branch, in which Brady takes a vicious hit from DeMarcus Ware that knocks Brady's helmet off. However, Brady's machismo loses a bit of its luster when his flying helmet reveals pigtails and ribbons adorning his luxurious mane.

In January, Brady is honored in People magazine's "Most Beautiful People" issue, appearing in both the male and female categories.

* In Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, the Atlanta Falcons beat the New York Jets, 24-21, winning on Matt Bryant's 53-yard field goal as time expires. A disappointed yet gracious Rex Ryan makes his way to the Falcons locker room after the game, not only to shake Bryant's hand, but to get a good look at the foot that won the Super Bowl.

* Oakland's Sebastian Janikowski boots a 66-yard field goal as time expires to beat the Chargers 26-25 on November 10th, breaking the NFL record for longest field goal. The veteran Raider kicker earns a free trip to Disneyworld, and while there, an intoxicated Janikowski goes berserk while in line for the Dumbo ride. Janikowski slugs an attendant, and a chase ensues involving park security, police, and several Disney mascots. Janikowski eludes them all, and ironically, slips a "Mickey" in the process, but later turns himself in to authorities.

Janikowski is banned from Disneyworld, but is selected to the Pro Bowl, while the Raiders win the AFC West with a 9-7 record.

* Pearl Jam is chosen to perform at halftime of Super Bowl XLVI, and during the bands' set, lead singer Eddie Vedder gives a shout out to Al Davis, celebrating his 50th year with the Oakland Raiders. The band then plays their 1991 debut single, "Alive."

* The Houston Texans finally break through and win the AFC South title, defeating the Colts twice on their way to an 11-5 record, earning the AFC's No. 3 seed. In the wild card round, however, the Texans host the sixth-seeded Colts at Reliant Stadium, and fall to the Colts 38-14 behind 356 yards passing and 5 touchdown throws from Peyton Manning, a performance that earns the Texans defensive backfield the dubious nickname "The Burn Unit."

Gary Kubiak is fired as head coach, and the Texans soon name Kyle Shanahan as his successor.

* Arizona's Larry Fitzgerald endures another difficult season, as the Cardinals again suffer quarterback issues. While he is nowhere near the league lead in receptions, Fitzgerald, always the consummate teammate, leads the NFL in receptiveness, to quarterback play not meeting the standards of a superstar wide receiver. When asked how he handles his dilemma, Fitzgerald, a deeply spiritual man, replies that he prays to higher powers, notably Kurt Warner and God, in that order.

"You're going to have a Super Bowl"; Latest on the NFL Lockout - Windy City Gridiron

The above quote can be attributed (from CBS Sports) to John Mara, the New York Giants president and co-owner.  It was spoken to a Indianapolis broadcast crew while the NFL Owners were in Indianapolis for their annual spring meetings.  NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell adds:

"It's our intention to be here, to play a full season and to conclude the 2011 season here in Indianapolis,"

Really?  Free agency is still on hold, the undrafted free agents are still waiting for jobs, some mini camps never took place, teams are cutting payroll, and now the recent cancellation of the rookie symposium has even the most optimistic football fan wavering.

Star-divide

Colts owner Jim Irsay floated July 4th as a cut off date before games have to be canceled.  Roger Goodell isn't focusing on a particular date:

"We don't have a date, but, obviously, that time is coming," said Goodell. "We're getting close enough now where those will have to become considerations. We would prefer to get a negotiated agreement so we don't have to make those decisions. This is going to be resolved through negotiations, and the ownership knows that, and the ownership believes that."

In my opinion, with all the owners meeting the chances of them getting a little antsy goes up.  According to NFL.com, a lot of what's being discussed in the owners meeting is the lockout.  From Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson:

"I can speak for the owners -- we had a very productive day yesterday," Richardson said Wednesday. "Pretty much, the day was spent discussing labor -- there were some playing rule discussions, too -- but I think we know what our options are. And we're in a waiting mode. I think we all need to see what's going to happen in July (when a ruling is expected). And then we'll go from there."

The NFL Coaches Association is starting to feel the effects of the lockout and have sided with the players, and have done so legally by filing an Amicus Brief with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.  From NFL.com:

"To me, this is a real simple deal: Coaches are opposed to the lockout because it's negatively affecting coaches," said Larry Kennan, director of the NFL Coaches Association. "If it were a strike, we would be against the strike, like we were in '87. This just happens to be the owners, and we're opposed to them, because they're locking out. But if it was a strike, we'd be against the players."

The coaches aren't the only entity that has filed an Amicus Brief with the Court of Appeals, a few weeks back the Sports Fans Coalition filed a brief on behalf of all football fans asking the court to uphold the trial order to end the lockout.  More can be found about that by clicking here

Some coaches are basically coaching the 2011 season for their jobs.  Even though no individual coach was named in the NFLCA's suit, several were referenced by name as being directly effected by the lockout.  From CBS Sports:

"The lockout, if left in force, will prevent the coaches from meaningfully preparing and readying themselves for the season," the brief reads. "While all the coaches will be exposed to greater risk of failure, the eight teams with new coaching staffs are at particular risk."

In a citation for that portion of the brief, the NFLCA also points out that "there are also three additional coaches who have only spent one season with their teams (Mike Shanahan, Chan Gailey, and Pete Carroll)" who will be significantly affected by the lockout.

Jack Del Rio and Gary Kubiak are specifically mentioned as coaches who "reportedly received an ultimatum from their team's owner that their teams must make the playoffs to keep their jobs."

In short, the NFLCA believes that close to half of the coaches in the NFL are being put at a systematic disadvantage by the the court's decision to continue the lockout.

The next big date for the lockout is June 3rd, when the players and the NFL will argue in front of the Court of Appeals.  June 3rd is also the day the Bears are set to start their mandatory veteran mini camp.  Something needs to get done.

Top 33 quarterbacks heading into the 2011 NFL season: Fan's view - Yahoo! Sports

This article was produced by a member of the Yahoo! Contributor Network, where users like you are published on Yahoo!

With the 2011 NFL season just around the corner, I've decided to take a look at some of the best quarterbacks that will hit the field if the lockout is ever lifted. From seasoned veterans to young up-and-comers, the NFL is loaded with some outstanding quarterback talent that continues to rise and fall from season to season. With that being said, check out my rankings of the Top 30 quarterbacks heading into the 2011 NFL season and the top three rookies who should contribute to their teams.

1. Aaron Rodgers(notes), Green Bay Packers: If I was starting a new franchise and was given my pick of any quarterback in the NFL to lead my team, I would pick Rodgers in a heartbeat. He's a proven winner and has the "it" factor that you want in an NFL quarterback.

2. Peyton Manning(notes), Indianapolis Colts: No one can deny that Manning is one of the best in NFL history, but his career is losing steam. Add that to the Colts' weak offensive line, and his career could be over sooner rather than later.

3. Tom Brady(notes), New England Patriots: Brady is a proven winner and one of the most impressive passers to grace the NFL turf. However, the Patriots have surrounded him with talent unparalleled by any other team.

4. Philip Rivers(notes), San Diego Chargers: The fact that the Chargers had the No. 1 offense in the NFL in 2010 despite multiple receiving corps injuries gives evidence to the elite quarterback that Rivers is.

5. Michael Vick(notes), Philadelphia Eagles: Only two years removed from jail and one year removed from replacing Donovan McNabb(notes), and Vick almost won the NFL's MVP award. You can color me impressed.

6. Matt Ryan(notes), Atlanta Falcons: The Falcons took that next step up the NFL hierarchy in 2010, but their climb was halted by the eventual Super Bowl champs. If Ryan can continue to tear apart defenses, a ring may be in his foreseeable future.

7. Drew Brees(notes), New Orleans Saints: Considering he left San Diego with a near career-ending injury, there hasn't been a much better feel-good story than Brees' comeback with the Saints and the city of New Orleans.

8. Ben Roethlisberger(notes), Pittsburgh Steelers: With rare play-making abilities and a strong track record, the only things holding him back are off-field issues and an inability to perform well on the NFL's biggest stage.

9. Joe Flacco(notes), Baltimore Ravens: If it wasn't for Flacco, the Ravens wouldn't have made the playoffs the last three seasons. If they can learn to take better advantage of their weapons, he can lead them even further.

10. Eli Manning(notes), New York Giants: Despite the fact that he has won a Super Bowl and has impressive stats compared to the rest of the league, he'll always be underrated due to his brother's success.

11. Tony Romo(notes), Dallas Cowboys: I'm not a fan of the guy, but it's hard for me to deny that he's a play-maker for the Cowboys. If only he knew how to win games in the playoffs— Staying healthy might help too.

12. Josh Freeman(notes), Tampa Bay Buccaneers: In only his second year in the NFL, Freeman led a young Buccaneers team to what should have been a playoff appearance. He's still got plenty of room to grow in the future.

13. Matt Schaub(notes), Houston Texans: Schaub could have easily been in the Top 10 if he would have led the Texans to a better outcome. A playoff appearance will seal his fate as an upper-echelon quarterback.

14. Sam Bradford(notes), St. Louis Rams: In just one year, Bradford took the Rams from a 2-14 team to a 7-9 team that was one win away from the playoffs. All signs are pointing towards a bright future in St. Louis.

15. Matt Cassel(notes), Kansas City Chiefs: After a disappointing first year with the Chiefs, Cassel broke out in 2010. With the help of receiver Dwayne Bowe(notes), he made a case for himself as one of the NFL's most underrated quarterbacks.

16. Carson Palmer(notes), Cincinnati Bengals: Even though retirement is possible, he is still one of the better passers in the league. His game is on the decline, but you can't doubt his strong arm and history of success.

17. Mark Sanchez(notes), New York Jets: So much potential lies within Sanchez, yet his immaturity seems to be holding him back. The Jets' running game is definitely helping him, though.

18. Matt Stafford, Detroit Lions: If it wasn't for all of the injuries that Stafford has suffered since entering the NFL, he could be in the Top 10. Staying healthy will be the key factor to his future success.

19. Jay Cutler(notes), Chicago Bears: Even though he still displayed his typical Cutler concerns, he led the Bears to the playoffs and helped bring them back to NFC North prominence. If only he could cut down on those blasted turnovers.

20. Kevin Kolb(notes), Philadelphia Eagles: It's extremely unclear where he will be playing in 2011, but he has the potential to be a quality starter for a number of teams desperate for new quarterback.

21. Donovan McNabb, Washington Redskins: Well the 2010 season didn't pan out at all how the Redskins expected it to, but there's still some semblance of talent left in the hollowed-out shell of McNabb.

22. Ryan Fitzpatrick(notes), Buffalo Bills: It's got to be a good sign for Fitzpatrick that the Bills didn't draft a new quarterback, but he's going to be on a short leash with his future as the team's starter still in question.

23. Kyle Orton(notes), Denver Broncos: Don't be surprised to see Orton quarterbacking for a new team soon. With Tim Tebow(notes) nipping at his heals and a poor 2010 performance, he's on thin ice at this point.

24. Colt McCoy(notes), Cleveland Browns: Despite being told that he wouldn't be seeing the field in 2010, injuries forced him into early playing time. He wasn't spectacular, but he proved he could win games.

25. David Garrard(notes), Jacksonville Jaguars: After plenty of chances to take the Jaguars to the next level, Garrard has fallen short. With his replacement now in town, he should end up being a spot starter somewhere else.

26. Chad Henne(notes), Miami Dolphins: There was hope for Henne the last couple years, especially with the addition of receiver Brandon Marshall(notes). Unfortunately, the Dolphins don't seem too happy with him anymore.

27. Shaun Hill(notes), Detroit Lions: Hill was arguably one of the most impressive backups in the NFL last year, filling in for Stafford valiantly. He may never be a true starter, but he's valuable off of the bench.

28. Matt Hasselbeck(notes), Seattle Seahawks: It's clear that Hasselbeck is nearing the end of his NFL career, but he may still have another season up his sleeve. That's just enough time for them to find a new quarterback.

29. Matt Flynn(notes), Green Bay Packers: Flynn is easily one of the best young backups in the NFL, but I don't expect the Packers to give him up any time soon unless a blockbuster deal comes along (i.e. Whitehurst trade in 2010).

30. Jason Campbell(notes), Oakland Raiders: Campbell is lucky to even make this list. The Raiders expected him to be the missing piece, but he couldn't even hold his starting spot the entire season.

Top three incoming rookies

1. Andy Dalton(notes), Cincinnati Bengals: If Palmer doesn't return to Cincinnati, Dalton will be his successor. If he can continue to learn and build on his skill set, the sky is the limit for this young gunslinger.

2. Cam Newton(notes), Carolina Panthers: Newton is going to be expected to become the savior and face of the Panthers' franchise. The talent is there, but it's still uncertain whether or not he can develop properly.

3. Christian Ponder(notes), Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings are in dire need of a new, young quarterback. If Ponder can stay healthy and live up to his potential, they could be looking at the future of the franchise.

'Dancing With the Stars' 2011: Hines Ward wins the trophy - Washington Post (blog)

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson take home the mirror ball trophy. (Adam Taylor - ABC)
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward claimed the hideous Mirror Ball Trophy as winner of the 12th season on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” Tuesday night.

Hines may have lost the Super Bowl to the Green Bay Packers back in February, but he did defeat actress/professional dieter Kirstie Alley on the penultimate night of the May 2011 TV sweep.

Kirstie had gone into tonight’s results show five points behind Hines and Disney princess Chelsea Kane.

Chelsea wound up finishing third because, while she was the season’s best and most consistent dancer – the other two competitors were Kirstie Alley and Hines Ward! And that’s how it rolls when you let viewers/fans do 50 percent of the deciding.

All three finalists earned perfect scores from the show’s three judges Tuesday when they re-performed their fave dance from the season.

Chelsea and Mark Ballas chose their Wizard Waltz that had judge Len Goodman’s knickers in such a bunch when first they performed it.

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson. (Adam Taylor - ABC)
Kirstie Alley and Maks Chmerkovskiy chose the cha cha cha she did the first week of the show because she wanted “to show fans that the dress is half the size it was in week one.” It was her first perfect score of the season.

And Hines and Kym Johnson re-did the Samba to Mama he’d done very early in the 10-week competition.

Like all results nights, this very last results show of the season was padded – this time to a whopping two hours – with musical guests.

The Black-Eyed Peas took the stage to sing their latest hit “Don’t Stop the Party” which sounded for all the world like YouTube phenom/nightmare “Friday.” Well, who knows where great ideas come from? The Peas do their patented step, The Running in Place Pea, and don’t attempt any lifts.

When ousted supermodel Petra Nemcova came back Tuesday to reprised the waltz she’d done this season to “You Raise Me Up,” suddenly Josh Groban came out on stage to sing the tune live -- hot off his appearance on the first night of the two-day “Surprise Oprah!” palooza.

Kirstie’s dance partner Max and the DWTS ladies danced while the Go-Go’s sang “We Got the Beat.” Max played a cop and the girls were street walkers, who stripped off his shirt and a four-way dance ensued. The Gos have put on a few years and look like high school music teachers, but they’re still rockin.

And Sarah Evans, the country singer and former “Dancing” competitor who famously dropped out to divorce her GOP operative husband over interesting pictures she claimed she’d found on the family computer, sang “A Little Bit Stronger” right before the results were announced.

Hines – a crowd fave, who was also much loved by the show’s three judges — had outmaneuvered the two women on Monday, when he played his long-held NFL Card. Hines went with football game halftime entertainment theme for his freestyle dance; he was decked out in a band uniform of Steeler black and gold with a big “S” on his chest and break away sleeves, while Kym dressed up as a gold lame cheerleader. They don’t call Hines the silent assassin for nothing.

This 12th edition of “Dancing” – forecast by the press to be a dud – will wind up the franchise’s most watched edition ever. Through last week, the dance competition was averaging about 21 million viewers, factoring in both the Monday performance shows and the Tuesday results shows. That’s about a million more people than watched last fall’s much ballyhooed edition, aka The Bristol Palin Season, when all the blah, blah, blah was about how casting the daughter of a polarizing political figure was such a coup for the show because it brought into the fold a whole new, very motivated Tea Party voting bloc.

(Palin’s mom, Sarah, who sat in the audience many weeks during her daughter’s season on the show, got one last close-up out of “Dancing” Tuesday night when the camera found her in the audience for Hines’ win.)

The show’s exec producer had said he’d love to get another polarizing political figure for this edition of the show, but when that failed to happen and this season’s politico-free celebrity lineup was announced, it was to the everlasting disappointment of the media.

Yahoo, for instance, pronounced this season’s lineup a “stumble” for the show, saying the names of this year’s lineup had been revealed, “to, let’s say, an underwhelmed public.” And, by “public” Yahoo meant “the press,” citing lousy reviews of the new celeb competitors, in the New York Times and Movieline.

Turns out, Palin did add new viewers to the show, but cost it others, who crawled back out from their bunkers, cautiously, when they got word that former Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell, who’d announced she had been approached by “Dancing” producers, would not be joining the show after all.

But, just because there was no polarizing political figure, don’t think this season lacked drama. This season the show had drama seeping from its pores.

Most recently, Hines – loved by Steelers fans for playing rough on the field, nearly snapped his dance partner Kym’s neck in two when he fell on her during a rehearsal and was whisked away in an ambulance. And he broke down and cried when they were able to actually perform their dance that week. This week she was still rehearsing in a neck brace – which may have helped them gain votes.

Maks – who we learned this season, likes to think of himself as sex on a stick – collapsed under Kirstie during a live, televised performance. Later Kirstie, who’d sworn to lose 40 pounds while competing, nearly collapsed during rehearsal due to lack of calories. Kirstie also lost a shoe during a dance one week – another “Dancing” first.

Ralph Macchio’s dance partner Karina Smirnoff tripped on his long coat tails during a live performance, and he gallantly picked up, dusted her off and got her back on track. Sadly Ralph blew all that good will he’d earned when he whined incessantly about leg pains he suffered soon thereafter.

When judge Len Goodman told Wendy Williams he liked how her “dumplings were boiling over” in her costumes, she deftly turned it into a Big Breast Crisis in a subsequent week during one of her hit-and-run attacks of self involvement, refusing to believe dance partner Tony Dovolani’s assurances that viewers were not obsessing over her large mammaries during her numbers.

Kendra Wilkinson revealed she’d been the victim of anti-Bunny prejudice which still exists in our society – an emotional pain which, on the bright side, put her in touch with her inner stripper as she rhumba’d with dance partner Louis Van Amstel. And Kendra turned out to be a force for truth in all things when Louis urged her to shake everything “that God gave her” and she announced “Well, my boobs aren’t what God gave me.”

And, we will never forget the show’s Celebriquarium hostess, Brooke Burke wondering how Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova and her partner Dmitry Chaplin, who is Russian, were going to be able to dance an “all-American quickstep” during “American Week” on the show. Petra, resisting the urge to bash Brooke over the head with the heel of her shoe, explained she would rely on the kindness of the non-xenophobic American voters who had gotten her this far in the competition.

2011 Pittsburgh Steelers Schedule - Locksmith Sports Picks

Written by Jimmy Boyd on May 23, 2011

Here’s the 2011 NFL schedule for the Pittsburgh Steelers:

Week 1 Sun, Sept. 11 at Baltimore Ravens CBS 1 p.m. – Pittsburgh won two of three against Baltimore last season, including the one that mattered most – a 31-24 victory in the Divisional round of the playoffs.

Week 2 Sun, Sept. 18 vs. Seattle Seahawks FOX 1 p.m. – The Seahawks marched into the playoffs after becoming the first team in NFL history to win a division with a losing record and knocked out the then-defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the first round.

Week 3 Sun, Sept. 25 at Indianapolis Colts NBC 8:20 p.m. – Pittsburgh’s first prime time game of the season is a must-see as its vaunted defense tries to slow down Peyton Manning.

Week 4 Sun, Oct. 2 at Houston Texans CBS 1 p.m. – This is Pittsburgh’s third road game in four weeks to start the season but the Steelers should be alright. The defending AFC champs were 7-1 on the road last year.

Week 5 Sun, Oct. 9 vs. Tennessee Titans CBS 1 p.m. – The Steelers forced seven turnovers in a 19-11 victory at Tennessee in Week 2 last season.

Week 6 Sun, Oct. 16 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars CBS 1 p.m. – The Jags blew a shot to win the AFC South with three consecutive losses down the stretch.

Week 7 Sun, Oct. 23 at Arizona Cardinals CBS 4:05 p.m. – The Steelers went 3-1 against NFC opponents in the 2010-11 regular season. A 20-10 defeat at New Orleans in Week 8 was their lone blemish out of conference before losing to the Packers in the Super Bowl.

Week 8 Sun, Oct. 30 vs. New England Patriots CBS 4:15 p.m. – Pittsburgh will be looking for some payback after falling 39-26 to Tom Brady and company a season ago.

Week 9 Sun, Nov. 6 vs. Baltimore Ravens NBC 8:20 p.m. – Hopefully this year’s edition of the Ravens v. Steelers Sunday Night Football showdown is as good as last year’s. Troy Polamalu made a big play to help the Steelers pull out a 13-10 victory in last season’s Sunday nighter at Baltimore.

Week 10 Sun, Nov. 13 at Cincinnati Bengals CBS 1 p.m. – Pittsburgh was 5-1 against division opponents last year. That mark includes a 27-21 win at Cincinnati.

Week 11 Bye

Week 12 Sun, Nov. 27 at Kansas City Chiefs NBC 8:20 p.m. – Winning at Arrowhead Stadium likely won’t be easy. The Steelers lost their most recent visit 27-24 in overtime in 2009. The Chiefs were 7-1 at home last season.

Week 13 Sun, Dec. 4 vs. Cincinnati Bengals CBS 1 p.m. – The Bengals only won one road game a year ago.

Week 14 Thu, Dec. 8 vs. Cleveland Browns NFL Network 8:20 p.m. – This is a potentially tough spot as Pittsburgh will tackle Cleveland with just three full days to prepare.

Week 15 Mon, Dec. 19 at San Francisco 49ers ESPN 8:30 p.m. – This is Pittsburgh’s only Monday Night Football contest of the season. The Steelers won their lone Monday Nighter 27-21 at Cincinnati in 2010.

Week 16 Sat, Dec. 24 vs. St. Louis Rams FOX 1 p.m. – The Rams finished 2-6 on the road a year ago.

Week 17 Sun, Jan. 1 at Cleveland Browns CBS 1 p.m. – The Steelers buried the Browns 41-9 at Cleveland in Week 17 last season.

Saints sell out Louisiana Superdome tickets for 2011 season - SportingNews.com

Fans in New Orleans are ready for some football, even as a lockout threatens to shut down next season.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the Saints have sold out the renovated Superdome — the sixth straight season home games have been a sellout in the 73,000-seat stadium.

Assuming the season starts on time, the Saints' home opener will be Sept. 8 against the Super Bowl-champion Green Bay Packers.

"Our renewal rate was at 98 percent or higher, during a time when there was labor uncertainty front and center in the news," VP of communications Greg Bensel told the newspaper in an email. "This is consistent with years prior. It speaks to the passion of our fans."

Count NFL commissioner Roger Goodell among those celebrating the Saints' ticket feat.

"It highlights the passion of the fans, and it's a real credit to the Saints organization and their great fans," Goodell said in an email to The Times-Picayune. "Saints fans recognize that we are working hard and committed to getting an agreement with the players, and they share our optimism that it will happen sooner rather than later if we can get back to collective bargaining."
